The night is not safe for mortals. Denise MacGregor knows all too well what lurks in the shadows—her best friend is half-vampire Cat Crawfield—and she has already lost more than the average human could bear. But her family's past is wrapped in secrets and shrouded in darkness—and a demon shapeshifter has marked Denise as prey. Now her survival depends on an immortal who lusts for a taste of her.

He is Spade, a powerful, mysterious vampire who has walked the earth for centuries and is now duty-bound to protect this endangered, alluring human—even if it means destroying his own kind. Denise may arouse his deepest hungers, but Spade knows he must fight his urge to have her as they face the nightmare together . . . Because once the first crimson drop falls, they will both be lost.

I can say that when I heard that Jeaniene Frost was doing books about side characters I was so excited! I love all the side characters, Spade, Ian, Mencheres, and Vlad. I mean who wouldn't want a book about these hot master vamps. But I was slightly disappointed with Spade's book, FIRST DROP OF CRIMSON. I mean it is hard for any book to complete with Cat and Bones. I think they will forever be the best. Denise is branded by an demon searching for one of her ancestors who betrayed him centuries ago. The demon, Raum wants Denise to find Nathaniel, her ancestor back to him. If she does not accomplish this task he will kill every single member of her family and she will forever bear his mark. Denise decides she needs the help of Cat and Bones but they are no where to be found so she enlists the help of Spade to stop this demon and get rid of the mark that the demon has placed upon her.

Denise is nothing like Cat is. I couldn't really connect to Denise as well as I did with Cat. I didn't really care for Denise all that much. Spade was a gentlemen and kind. Denise and Spade spend half of the book fighting their desires for each other. Denise is Spade's best friend's Wife's friends and there is a line there he doesn't want to cross, his friendship with Bones. But he still ends up falling in love with her. Denise is still getting over Randy's death, but she is also drawn to Spade. I kind of felt like Denise was just thrown in the story. I mean I don't really feel a connection between this couple. I think that was one major problem why I was disappointed.

I really liked that we finally get to learn of Spade's past and about the human he loved years ago that was killed. Spade does not want to get close to humans, especially a human woman again, and feel and care deeply about them due to a tragic incident years ago and I eel for him. It breaks my heart. This was a very enjoyable read but the only thing is I didn't feel that spark with Spade and Denise. **Cat and Bones do make an appearance in this book if you are wondering.
