Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.
The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.
I loved the idea of Matched. Matched with a guy that the society has found to be your perfect match, but you end up falling in love with someone else who also might be your perfect match and soul mate.
I thought this story was very unique, but this book ended up just not being my type. I loved Cassia the main character. She questions things that they society does and although she cannot helping to think of her Match, Xander. She is so drawn to Ky.
I really don't know if I could have everything decided for you. Especially when you die. I really would hate to live in this world where your freedom and everything is taken from you. It is horrifying to think about. I think that Condie did a fantastic job with the start of this book, but towards the middle of the book I felt myself getting very bored with the story. It was very hard for me to pay attention and it didn't keep my interest.
Although I loved the characters Cassia and Xander I thought Cassia's other love interest, Ky could have been improved. I wasn't crazy about him all that much. He is an okay character. Even though I liked Xander, well both love interests didn't have enough of that spark that I am suppose to see in a love interest for the female lead. I don't think I will continue with this series. This was my first dystopian book and I am not sure if I like the genre all that much. I need to try some more to see.
Just wait til you read Delirium and Wither. Have you read either? OMG they're amazing.
ReplyDeleteI have only read one other dystopian and that is Across the Universe which of course I liked. I haven't read Wither, but I started Deliruim from NetGallery, but didn't finish b/c of kindle problem.
ReplyDeleteSorry you didn't like this one. I got it from the library but returned it unread. I just don't think it's the book for me.
ReplyDeleteI think there are two types of YA dystopians: The slow kind like Matched and Delirium that focus a lot on romance and a slow awakening, and the fast-paced action-oriented ones like The Hunger Games or The Maze Runner. I much prefer the faster-paced kind.
Yea. I thought this was slow. Maybe I will try Delirium.
ReplyDeleteWait wait... back up. THIS is your first dystopian? Meaning... YOU HAVEN"T READ THE HUNGER GAMES??!! *Gasp!*
ReplyDeletehaha. omg. you are so funny. but sadly, I haven't read Hunger Games. I was gonna check it out, but I haven't yet. I'm a dystopian newbie XD
ReplyDeleteAh, too bad you didn't like this one. I loved it! Loved everything about Matched.
ReplyDeleteYou need to run right out and read The Hunger Games, right quick! It's required reading, as far as I'm concerned.
